Anybody Can Organize a Closet! Plus a Video Tour

Have you ever heard anyone say "I have too much closet space!"?

Yeah neither have I. It seems like no matter the size of the closet, everyone always wishes they were better organized and had more space to store things. As a collector of clothing who also lives in a small space, I have learned some great tips and tricks to squeezing every last inch of space. I'm sure that none of these techniques are ground breaking earth shattering revolutions, but they are what works for me.  You can watch the video below where I talk about how I work with a small closet (hint... I don't) and how I keep things organized. I will also be talking a bit about how I'm changing the way I shop for, wear, and think about clothing.

Ok Now for a more detailed break down of each technique

I use these slim velvet hangers by Amazon basics. I ordered 2 or 3 of the packs of 50 and they more than doubled my hanging space. Not to mention that having all matching sleek hangers keeps my closet space looking neat and like a boutique.

My scarves and shorts are hanging on 4 tiered pants hanger and round scarf hangers that I also got from amazon, and work so much better for me than trying to keep them folded Konmari style in a bin or drawer.

I have tried to cram all my clothing into my very small closet and I just couldn't make it work. The closet I use currently is split into two sections and I don't have room to hang dresses. Some may view this as cheating, but I use an additional garment rack for dresses and bottoms. This one is very similar to the one I have, a simple extendable bar.

Another option that I think would be great for anyone who needs more space is this model that also has an upper and lower shelf, perfect for storing shoes, bags, luggage, or out of season clothing

Most of my drawer dividers are just various sized boxes that I already had around my house. I love using shoe boxes for dividing a drawer into sections for items like t-shirts or intimates, and smaller boxes like the kind that come with iPhones and Warby Parker glasses for jewelry and other small items. I also really like to use clear drawer inserts for my smaller drawers, like this one by Whitmore.

I also use a divider very similar to this one for earrings and small pins, its made for lipstick but I think its ideal for keeping earring pairs together.

Much of my clothing can be worn year round, but anything that is reserved for the triple digit summer days, or the coldest days of winter gets tucked away into a tall bin from ikea that fits perfectly under my bed. I try to limit myself to 1 bin of stored away extras, to manage my space and my shopping habits.

See you next time!
